Sinulog sa Carmen 2015

Last January 25, I was able to witness (for the first time ever) Carmen town’s very own Sinulog. In case you guys haven’t heard yet, the town of Carmen holds its very own Sinulog celebration one week after the end of the festivities in Cebu City. Sinulog sa Carmen has been around for quite a while now. And in fact, it is now considered one of the largest in the whole island.

This year, to finally see it with my own eyes, and to support my good friend Alex of Tribu Lumad Basakanon, we traveled all the way to Carmen (and endured the heavy traffic) to witness one of the most colorful festivals this side of the island.

Scenes from the 2015 Solemn Foot Procession

Every year, a day before the Sinulog Grand Parade, one very important event takes places in Cebu. Starting at 1 in the afternoon, the image of Cebu’s Holy Child Señor Santo Niño is paraded through the streets of Cebu City. Although the route is relatively short, the tail end of the parade usually reaches the Basilica after dark.

This activity is considered one of the biggest religious activities in the whole country. In fact, hours before the start of the procession, the route (and all other adjacent roads) are blocked off to accommodate the overwhelmingly huge foot traffic. And just how huge, you ask? Let’s just say “millions.” That huge.

Here are some of the scenes I managed to capture on camera last Saturday, January 17, 2015. Hope you enjoy the photos!

Battle of the Queens

Every year, exactly two days before the Sinulog Grand Parade, a different kind of competition is witnessed by thousands at the Cebu City Sports Complex. The lead dancers from participating Sinulog contingents compete for the coveted title Sinulog Festival Queen. To win the title, the lead dancer must have exceptional grace, poise, beauty, and talent.

Here are some photos from the Sinulog Festival Queen 2015 competition and awards night. Enjoy!

Prayer of the Faithful

Each year, during the Sinulog Season in Cebu, novena masses are held for nine days at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño. Despite the number of services held each day (masses are held every 1.5 hours starting at 7 am,) the Basilica is always filled to the rafters with devotees and pilgrims.

Usually, I don’t get to attend these special masses because of work. This year, however, due to some issues at work, I was able to attend around five. Here are some photos I took during these novena masses. I hope you enjoy them. And Pit Senyor, everyone! :)
