Sinulog Grand Parade 2014

The Sinulog season is probably my most favorite season of all.  I don’t know how to explain it. But as Sinulog Sunday approaches, Cebu just transforms into something indescribably amazing. Everyone suddenly becomes upbeat and giggly and jovial. The whole atmosphere just suddenly becomes brighter and happier. And that beat, that amazing beat that gets played all throughout the city just all of a sudden makes me want to drop everything and break out in a dance. Haha.

I love the Sinulog. Not because it reminds me of parties and dancing and lots of people. I guess there’s no clear explanation for this fascination. Except maybe for the very simple fact that I am a Cebuano.

Sinulog Festival Queen 2012

Last Friday, January 13, 2012, the annual search for the most talented Sinulog lead dancer was held. The competition, held at the Cebu City Sports Center, started at around 7:30 in the evening. The event, one of the highlights of the Sinulog season, features gorgeous lead dancers from various contingents in their awe-inspiring and truly magnificent gowns.

By the way, sorry for the shots. I couldn’t find a space near the front because the photographers who were there were all using ladders. Hehehe. I had to stay near the side of the stage with other photographers with ‘smaller’ cameras. :D

This year’s Sinulog Festival Queen is Apriel Smith of Cebu City’s Tribu Lumad Basakanon.

Sinulog Festival Queen 2011

The Search for the Sinulog Festival Queen is a contest held two days before the Sinulog Grand Parade. If you’re not so sure what it is, listen up. The Search for the Sinulog Festival Queen is an annual contest which aims to determine the best female lead dancer. The winners are chosen based on how they carry themselves as they dance bearing the image of the Sto. Niño. This year, 20 contestants from various contingents joined the contest.

Here are some of the photos I took during the event. You must know, however, that the photos are very far from perfect. I still don’t fully understand some functions of my camera. Hehehe. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the photos. Pit Senyor!

Pasko Sa Sugbo 2009

Last Tuesday, December 1, a short program was held at the Fuente circle to officially start the Pasko sa Sugbo 2009 celebrations and to light the 2009 giant Christmas Tree. Present during the event were Cebu City Vice Mayor Mike Rama, Michel Lhuillier of M Lhuillier and other city officials. The multi-awarded Lumad Basakanon was also there to perform one of their award-winning routines. Here are some shots of the Fuente Osmeña circle during the event.

Triple Win

Okay, so it’s official. (Cebu City’s) Sinulog’s Lumad Basakanon is Aliwan Fiesta’s first Hall of Famer. Yahoo!!!! The Sinulog Festival was installed in the Aliwan Hall of Fame after 3 straight wins in the Cultural Street Dance category (2006-2007-2008). So, for this year’s competition, they were not allowed to perform.

Grandslam Na!!!

Wow! The yearly Aliwan Fiesta in the cavesera has become a very expensive and well-organized ‘brawl magnet’. Last year, members of Cebu and Iloilo’s contingents figured in a brawl. And now, this year, Alikaraw of Leyte and Carmen of Cebu went against each other outside the dance floor. Insults flew in all directions and trumpets were smashed. It keeps getting bloodier every year, doesn’t it?

As one blogger quipped, the Aliwan has done more harm than good. It has marked all diligently-nursed disputes blood red. Camaraderie is forgotten and division becomes more pronounced.

We cannot put all the blame on the Aliwan Organizers, of course. Everyone involved should take full responsibility.

So let’s all hope that this doesn’t happen again in the future.

————————

Anyways, I’m glad that our Cebuano contingents got the honors that they deserve.

Congrats guys!!!! Grandslam na gyud!!!
