An OOC (Out of Cebu) Post

A few weeks ago, my good friend Ramesh of Davao Photo Blog announced that he was finally tying the knot. And he said that he hoped to see me and his other friends (Vet of VetLongWalks, Yum of Bored&Crafty, and Line of Gastronomic Adventures) during that very special day. I told Ram that we wouldn’t miss it for the world. We’ve put off all plans of visiting him in Davao in the past and we thought that this was the perfect moment that we’ve all been waiting for. We’d be hitting three birds with one stone, I realized. We’d be able to visit him, check out Davao City, and attend a traditional muslim wedding. In other words, Ram made us an offer we couldn’t refuse. Hahaha.

We’re finally in Davao City!

We left Cebu at 4:30 am last October 31. By 6, we were already in our hotel trying to get some sleep. LOL.

 We were all so hungry, however, so we decided to go out and grab something to eat. We found a small restaurant right beside Ateneo de Davao. Chicken Hotdog with egg and prawn crackers!

After breakfast, we toured downtown Davao a little.

When we came back, we were no longer sleepy. So, we spent our time watching Shake, Rattle, and Roll. Hahaha.

We went to the Venue (Royal Mandaya Hotel) a few minutes before the start of the ceremony. The venue was lovely!

At the start of the ceremony, young muslim men marched down the aisle carrying containers covered with colored baskets. These men are called ‘damak’.

Then, they removed the cover and placed the food on the tables.

Inside was a plate filled with different kinds of pastries and sweets. They are made just for the occasion by the groom’s family. According to the host, these young men walk from the groom’s house to the bride’s house carrying these treats a day or night before the wedding.

The guests were allowed to taste the pastries as well as the appetizers placed on the tables. Wow.

This was the actual ceremony. Traditionally, the bride is never seen until the vows are made and the wedding is declared legal and binding by the officiating priest. Also, a muslim wedding can never be considered valid if one or more of its basic components are missing. If you take a close look, Ram is standing in front of a man who is the representative of the bride. The groom will say his vows to this representative in front of witnesses. When the ceremony is completed, the bride is presented together with her own entourage.

The ceremony lasted for almost an hour. Congratulations once again, Ram and Jeehana!

I’m so thankful that Ram invited us to his wedding. It was such a nice experience.

After the ceremony, we went back to the hotel and slept the whole afternoon. Around 6 pm, Ram told us to go to SM City Davao. There, they picked us up and brought us to one of Davao’s most famous BBQ joints – LUZ’s Kinilaw Place.

The next day, we woke up early for our flight back to Cebu. Satchmo excited to go home.

 It was an awesome trip! Ram, and Jeehana, thanks for the invite! Davao is a lovely city!

Our friend Jeffroger of DiningCebu.com emailed me last week about a new restaurant which opened just recently in Asiatown IT Park. Jeff revealed that the restaurant, called Out of Africa, is actually owned by a friend. And me and Line’s names came up when his friend asked him to taste some of the restaurant’s dishes and maybe blog about the experience. So, I told Line about the invite and, as expected, she said yes. A good friend once told me about this particular restaurant and he said that I should definitely give it a try. I was quite intrigued, so I did a little research myself. I found out that the restaurant serves exotic dishes. And by exotic, I mean ‘crocodile, ostrich, wild boar,  deer, and venison’ exotic. It’s quite big for me because I happen to have taste buds that reject anything that doesn’t taste like it’s cooked by my mother. Hahaha. Well, it was still a mighty good opportunity that I couldn’t turn my back on. After all, I don’t eat buaya every day. Haha.

Ludy and I reached the Cebu South Bus Terminal at around 5:00 pm. The terminal was in total chaos as first-time travelers couldn’t find their way around and terminal regulars were so loud and busy complaining about the new ticketing system. LOL.

Our bus left the terminal at six. The bus was filled to the rafters and I had to bend, twist, and wiggle just to keep an old man who was standing beside my seat from sitting on my face. LOL. But that didn’t prevent me from dozing off. Before the bus even reached Carcar, I  was already dreaming of chicken lollipops and spaghetti. Hahaha. I woke up when the bus was already in Malabuyoc. Strangely, the old man was still standing there, his butt still just a few inches from my forehead. Whatever happened from the time I closed my eyes til the time I woke up, I don’t want to know. Hahaha.

We reached Irene’s house in Tangbo, Samboan at 10:30 in the evening. The trip was so tiring. And as expected, I almost puked. Twice. Hahaha. ‘I’ll definitely go ballistic if this trip doesn’t turn out to be post-worthy,’ I told myself as I got off the bus. LOL.

We traveled to Ginatilan (the next municipality) to check out the Inambakan Falls. I saw the sign the previous night and I told them about it. By the way, we saw this eGwen poster near the town church. Hehehe.

The road to the falls is quite dangerous and tricky. If you’re not an experienced driver, please let someone else drive. We made a few stops because our service vehicle (a multicab) could not take our weight (There were 15 of us. Hahahaha.) Eventually, the multicab had to turn back and only 6 of us went to the falls.

We walked for 500 meters before we found a habal-habal. The habal-habal took us to the poblacion for 20 pesos each.

Then, we got on a tricycle to get to Samboan for 15 pesos each.

Back at the house, people were already eating. What? No more kubal?!?!!? Hahahaha.

It was once again a very nice trip. And definitely post-worthy! Big thanks to the Olores Family! Happy birthday Aiz and your grandpop who was so accommodating and nice. And thanks to Ryan, Irene, her grandma, her mom, her sisters, and everyone who made the trip fun and very memorable.

A few weeks ago, the city government jump-started its campaign to educate people about a new mass transit system, which, although probably relatively unknown to most Cebuanos, had already been proven to be very cost-efficient and effective in other parts of the world. I was one of the lucky few who got invited to this seminar which was personally handled by Cebu City’s City Planning and Development Coordinator Sir Nigel Paul Villarete. The BRT seminar didn’t make me an expert, true, but I must say that 90% of my ‘uneducated’ questions about the system were answered.

Just last week, news of the proposal of the implementation of yet another system shocked Cebu. Congressman Gullas so boldly declared that he will bring LRT to this little island of ours.

To daydreamers (like myself. LOL) the possibility is orgasmic. Cebu, a little unknown island with people living their lives quietly, will have a kick-ass mass transit system? That’s one tempting probability.

But before we all make a decision and place our bets, let’s have a deeper understanding of the similarities, differences, advantages, and disadvantages of the two systems.

So which is which? BRT or LRT?

Similarities

BRT and LRT both operate on two very similar principles. In fact, the two systems are very similar that almost all components necessary to operate the LRT are also necessary to successfully operate the BRT. It is said that the two systems are so alike that you wouldn’t know the difference when you board either of them with your eyes closed.

Differences

The major component that makes LRT different from BRT is the ‘carrier’ used to move a huge number of people from one point to another. Clearly, LRT utilizes trains. BRT, on the other hand uses buses.

But the list doesn’t end there. Read on for more information.

- The government will have to spend a lot for the construction, maintenance, and operation of LRT terminals and rails. It is said that the 16.8 kilometer-EDSA MRT is subsidized by the Government at US$7.5 billion annually. In short, the entire nation is paying for this annual expenditure which is only being used in the capital. To operate the LRT, $15million to $40 million is needed for every kilometer. To operate the BRT, $500,000 to $15 million is needed per kilometer.

- The proposed LRT will cost P28.94 Billion. The proposed BRT will cost P3.6 Billion.

- BRT will utilize an exclusive bus lane. The system can run on an already existing road. It can also operate on pocket/special/new roads constructed mainly for the system. LRT will utilize an exlusive ‘passageway’ which can be built above or below ground.

- A major component of the BRT is the construction of public walkways and bikeways. The system therefore, gives back to the pedestrian the space that they need and deserve.

- The city government plans to implement BRT in 2013 or 2014.

- New railways will have to be constructed to accommodate the LRT. The initial plan is to build a railway in the middle of Jones Avenue traversing the Fuente circle.

- The rumored initial pilot route of the BRT is from Talamban to Pardo. According to Mr. Villarete, the system will be implemented first in Cebu City to avoid possible delays in case the mayors of Talisay, Mandaue, or Lapulapu refuse to support the plan.

- To maintain the LRT tracks, Geometry trains, x-ray trains, and vacuum trainsare needed. Geometry train check the contour and vibration of the train caused by the track. X-ray trains check for metal fatigue on the rails, like crack and gaps. vacuum trains pick-up garbage on the tracks.

A BRT station can look as simple as a bus stop or as lavish as a monorail station. Here is an example of a simple BRT station.

Most BRT buses look like ordinary buses (size-wise). Some BRT buses, however, can have ‘multiple cars’ and can look like this one in Germany.

Last week, I asked my officemate Cel, who currently lives in Inayawan, if she could take me to the landfill so that I could take a few photos. She reasoned that although she is a resident of Inayawan, she has never been there and that she doesn’t know anyone who could actually take us inside. I thought that my last chance of ever seeing the place was lost. 

When I learned this morning that my parents were going to Carcar to visit the manghihilot, I grabbed the opportunity and told them that I’d go to Carcar with them if and only if we check out the landfill first. As they too were interested and curious, they agreed. LOL.

We reached E. Jaca Street in Inayawan at around 8 in the morning. It was still very early but the road which lead to the main dump site was already bustling with different activities. Scrap shops were already open and people of all ages  carrying heavy sacks of random stuff were already scurrying to sell their ‘finds’. As we drew closer to the main gate, despite my nasal congestion, the smell of garbage became more and more biting. Just outside the compound, there were burning mounds, broken bottles in the gutter, and rotting vegetables and fruits near black and sticky puddles.

We parked our bikes near the main gate as we looked around for anyone who could answer a few questions. A young man who came out of the ‘guard house’ walked to us and asked what we wanted. I told him that I wanted to go up and take a couple of pictures of the site. He said that we needed to secure a permit. And since it was a Sunday, there was no one who could sign one for us. Although we were a bit disappointed, we didn’t push the issue, and just thanked him for answering our questions. When we were about to leave, the same guy came towards us and told us that he could take us to the top to take a few photos if it would take less than thirty minutes. I promised that I would only take a couple of snaps and that we would be done in less than ten minutes.

WARNING: If you can’t take the sight of garbage, please stop don’t go any further. Hehehe.

While waiting outside the gate, I noticed more than 4 garbage trucks from Baranggay Guadalupe enter the site. Cebu’s biggest baranggay certainly also produces lots of garbage.

According to our guide Nelson, this section (after the lamp post) is where waste materials from Cebu’s hospitals are dumped. Kinda scary.

My guesstimate, these were dumped just this week.

Soil is placed on top of the garbage to keep the smell bearable.

Nelson wasn’t so sure that but he said that the size of the whole property is 88 hectares.

Indeed, there is money in garbage. Nelson shared that some of these ’scavengers’ were lucky enough to find jewelry, cellular phones, and even un-used garments.

I was updating my Facebook account when I chanced upon the scouting photos of one contact. I found the photos really interesting particularly because I also was a scout when I was very little. Hehe. I could still remember that Friday was my most favorite day of the week because I got to wear my Cab Scout/Boy Scout uniform. I also could never forget that I thoroughly enjoyed marching and learning how to tie different types of knots.

After looking at my contact’s photos, I decided to get on my bike and go to the Boy’s Scout Camp in Capitol Hills. There were so many questions in my mind that I wanted to answer. Is the Boys Scout Camp still as spooky as it was when I was little? Is the huge huge swimming pool still alive? There was only one way to find out.

As I drove around the area, I remembered the past. I remembered the camp sites, the ghost stories, the fun, all the marching, the competitions, and the friendships. And most of all, I remembered the pool. The bruises, the missing slippers, the wet underwear. I remembered my childhood. I remembered it all.

So, yeah. The pool is still alive and kicking. The Boys Scout Camp is still very spooky. The ‘pocket forest’ however is no longer that scary. And that house where Si Goat Da Wanderpul was shot? I couldn’t even remember where it stood exactly. The place is now filled with dozens of houses. Oh well, things do change. And that’s exactly why need photographs and memories.

According to the CEBU Facebook page, an American dweller in the Philippines said: “I wish you all could see the amazing community spirit, charity and compassion in the Philippines. What I see happening here totally blows away the response to hurricane Katrina. People here have less to give, yet they are giving ABUNDANTLY. There is such a greater story than just the ‘death toll’ that the American media fails to capture.”
