Sinulog Grand Parade 2014

The Sinulog season is probably my most favorite season of all.  I don’t know how to explain it. But as Sinulog Sunday approaches, Cebu just transforms into something indescribably amazing. Everyone suddenly becomes upbeat and giggly and jovial. The whole atmosphere just suddenly becomes brighter and happier. And that beat, that amazing beat that gets played all throughout the city just all of a sudden makes me want to drop everything and break out in a dance. Haha.

I love the Sinulog. Not because it reminds me of parties and dancing and lots of people. I guess there’s no clear explanation for this fascination. Except maybe for the very simple fact that I am a Cebuano.

An Endless Sea

A day before the Sinulog Grand Parade – the grandest festival in the country – Cebuanos fill the major streets of Cebu. Not to party and have fun, no. They come together, brave the heat or endure the rain, and walk for miles for one sole purpose – to honor and pay homage to the Sr. Santo Niño de Cebu.

The foot procession of Cebu is a great equalizer. During this miles-long parade, nobody is young or old, rich or poor, weak or strong. Nobody is too famous, or too important, or too special to just be a faceless drop in an endless sea of humanity. During this great display of faith and devotion, people simply walk together as brothers, as devotees, as Cebuanos.

Sinulog Sa Kabataan 2014

The Sinulog sa Kabataan (Sinulog of the Youth) is a yearly event which showcases the talent (and dedication) of young Sugbuanons. Aside from the Grand Parade, the Sinulog sa Kabataan is considered one of the most well-attended events during the whole Sinulog season. This two-day event, which is marked by street parades that culminate in a grand showdown at the Cebu City Sports Center, is made up of two parts. On the Saturday before the Sinulog weekend, teams from different cities and municipalities of Cebu compete in the Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Lalawigan (Province) contest. The following day, teams from different schools and barangays in the city compete in the Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Dakbayan (City) contest. The Top 5 winning teams for each contest will compete in the Sinulog Grand Parade the following Sunday.

This year’s Sinulog sa Kabataan is filled with so much excitement and emotion. Fresh from the many dizzying tragedies of 2013, some of the most evident themes this year include loss, community, survival, and hope.

Anyways, here are some of the photos from the two events. Hope you enjoy them.

Pit Senyor! See you at the Grand Parade!

Devotee City

Each year, millions converge in Cebu for the celebration of the biggest religious festival in the Visayas. With the overflowing number of visitors, Cebu’s guest accommodations are easily filled to the rafters. Despite this fact, a good number of our brothers and sisters from neighboring islands still travel to Cebu to pay homage to Sr. Santo Niño. And they pack their bags and get on the first Cebu-bound boat they find even though there is a big possibility that they will be sleeping in the sidewalks when they reach the city. In fact, a lot of devotees from the provinces do not mind sleeping in the streets for a couple of nights at all. What is important is that they get to dance the Sinulog and celebrate with the rest of Cebu.

To remedy this situation (especially since it’s storm season, too) the city government has come up with the ‘Devotee City’ project. Each year, a certain spot near the port area is set up to accommodate pilgrims from nearby provinces. The project aims to house devotees who have no relatives in the city and those who could not afford decent accommodations. The sleeping quarters at the Devotee City aren’t topnotch but I’m sure you understand the intention.

For those who do not know about this, let me show you this year’s Devotee City.

Rain or Shine

I was able to attend the third day of Novena at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño last Saturday. I know you’ve seen this type of photos before, but allow me to post a couple of the shots that I snapped. The weather has been pretty bad lately. And I’m not just talking about drizzles. It’s heavy downpours which are often accompanied by strong winds. But do you think these rains and strong winds are enough to keep Cebuanos from leaving the warm comforts of their homes? I don’t think so.

The Novena Masses at the Basilica are very well-attended. Rain or shine.
