Beating Ondoy

2 10 2009

I would like to thank all Cebuanos who dropped by the Ondoy Donation Drop-off booth in Fuente. I’m so happy to know that despite all the financial difficulties that we’ve all been experiencing, people are still willing help and give. I would also like to thank all the volunteers who made the packing, shipping, and distribution easier. God bless us all!

The drop-off booth will remain open until 9 pm tonight. If you have some old clothes or a few extra packs of noodles, please donate them. I (together with my group – SSC-Cebu) will be at the booth tonight to help accept donations. Let’s all beat Ondoy! See you there, guys! :)

I would also like to thank the people at my office for their donations. In just two days, we were able to gather more than 6 sacks of used clothing and a couple of boxes of medicine, canned goods, and noodles. Thanks a lot guys!

Thanks to Mike for allowing us to use his truck. Hehehe.

According to the CEBU Facebook page, an American dweller in the Philippines said: “I wish you all could see the amazing community spirit, charity and compassion in the Philippines. What I see happening here totally blows away the response to hurricane Katrina. People here have less to give, yet they are giving ABUNDANTLY. There is such a greater story than just the ‘death toll’ that the American media fails to capture.”

Due to the overwhelming support from Cebuanos, the drop-off center had to request for more buses to accommodate all donations.

That is so nice! God bless all of you… It actually bring tears to my eyes that people are being unselfish & showing their community spirit. Makes me PROUDER to be Cebuano. And that comment from an American living in Cebu is absolutely true & amazing to hear! Abante Bisaya!

This is a concrete proof that there exist in us the drive to be one in times of need. Together we can overcome adversities with a smile.
Another comment I’ve read (probably sent by a non-Filipino) while watching video clips of the flood : “What? No looting, no shooting?”

last night, while accepting donations, a balut vendor stopped in front of the booth and said that he wanted to donate. we told him that it would be very great. he then pulled out from his belt bag five twenty-peso bills and said ‘hinay baya ang kita karon. okay ra ba bisag 100 lang?’
we couldn’t help but be teary-eyed sa iyang gesture.

Ley, your balut-vendor story is quite moving.

By the way, what does SSC stand for?

SSC means Skyscraper City – Cebu. It started out as a small group of forumers focused mainly on developments and updates in Cebu. It has evolved into an NGO-like group of people who love Cebu.

i really can’t hold my tears to fall seeing and hearing stories and news about how Cebu people and the rest of our neighboring provinces had contributed in spirit, in flesh (volunteers), money and in kind to able to help our needy victims up north. .there’s no day that i don’t shed tear when i read news items here and in PI and the live streaming of DYAB-Abante Bisaya through stickam. . it really touches me. .way to go CEBU. and especially the VOLUNTEEERS-without you this would not be possible.

I was looking for an organization to send my money to. I looked at RedCross first but they do not have a facility online to donate specifically to the Pinas disaster. Anyway, I found you can with UNICEF and there’s even an anonymous donor who will match all donations going to the Pinas relief up to $500K. So that’s where I sent my money. The link is https://secure.unicefusa.org/site/Donation2?df_id=5960&5960.donation=form1. I also posted this link in the Undernet #Cebu IRC channel topic to spread the word there.

Hello Ley, as what my brother told me, maybe the water will subside by December if no more rains coming. They are living with her sister inlaw at the moment until they can rebuild another bahay kubo.

Thanks for your concern Ley.
