Hay. It’s pre-finals week and everyone’s busy reading, rereading, and re-reading again (hahaha. over sa reading na gyud na. LOL). We even had Sunday classes today. And what better thing to complete your Sunday than to listen to Judge Singco’s take on Philippine Politics. Judge Singco talked about the sessions in Congress and the so-called Executive Privilege.
By ten-thirty, she called for a short break and everyone was allowed to leave the room. I stayed by the corridor to catch a glimpse of the busy Carbon life. The view of the Carbon Market was so awesome that I had to ask Sheena to whoop out her camera and shoot. She (with my direction, of course. LOL) did a pretty neat job. Thanks Sheena!

i heard nga himuon nang park ang breakwater sa baranggay ermita dapit. also, ang unit (3? dili ko sure. basta kanang unit nga naay tinda mga candies, mga goodies for children) will be torn down. a multi-level parking, a school and a shopping center will be made there.
Veggie storage facility eyed in Carbon Market

Vendors at Carbon Public Market will not only have a new market building but also a facility that will help them maintain the freshness of their products, as Mayor Tomas Osmeña plans to put up a cold storage facility in the market’s Unit 2, which the city will soon reconstruct.
The mayor said the city has already decided to use “palay” husk to boil the water for the steam that would run the City Hall’s air conditioning system. With this, he added that there is a big probability that the same would be used to run his planned cold storage facility.
If materialized, this would become the second cold storage facility in Cebu province after the one in Mantalongon in Dalaguete, known as “Cebu’s Food Basket,” which acquired the facility a few years ago through the Department of Agriculture.
Osmeña recognized that one of the problems of the vendors is how to maintain the freshness of their products for a longer period of time.
“Cebu City is known as center of distribution of various commodities,” the mayor said, adding that the products that vendors sell are always affected by the supply and demand factor.
He said he has long wanted such a facility in Carbon but there is lack of private support, particularly in the area of cold storage.
But Osmeña said the city would first start with a program to see if it is feasible to put a cold storage facility in Carbon Market, adding that he would also like to see if how much the city would spend for it.
He also said he wanted to implement first a smaller facility but expandable, so if it is found effective, it could be expanded.
“If it is feasible, we would do a minimum amount but expandable. So if the works already start, we will make sure that it would allow expansion of space,” the mayor said.
Last week, the city government started clearing the area where the Unit 2 of the market will be reconstructed by evicting all its occupants, including Young Builders Inc. and the fire victims of sitio Bato, Ermita.
Anytime soon, WT Construction will start constructing the market’s P135-million ramp.
The civil works on the market’s reconstruction was delayed after Young Builders, the former contractor of the project, built a fence and refused to allow entry to the area until the city pays it an additional P6 million

Tinuod nga dunay daghang snatcher ug holdupper dinha? Naa ko sa Cebu karon nibisita sa akong family. Ganahan unta ko mo-adto sa Carbon because we used to go there often when I was a boy (pobre gud ta) pero my family dissuaded me from going kay dilikado kuno. Such a pity. Visiting Ayala and SM gets old pretty quickly.
Unless you go there in glittering golden garb and ruby slippers, nothing would happen to you. I always believed that you get held up because allow yourself to be held up. Hope that answered your question. hehe

Thanks for the advice. I did go to Carbon Market on my last day there. I figured I’d be ok because kama-o man sab ko mag-binagsik. My only regret was that I didn’t go sooner. I would have loved to visit a second (or third) time. In many ways, it’s the same Carbon from my childhood – except there’s less traffic congestion because only a few routes are allowed there now. It was fun going through the market stalls. Yes, one can buy in malls/supermarkets the fruits and vegetables found in Carbon – but in Carbon, it’s cheaper, fresher, and the money goes directly to the hardworking farmers.

Carbon Market is an awesome place. I will be shopping there very early in the morning everyday when I go home next month. Just thinking of this place invokes my sense of smell from the meat, fish, live chicken sections, to the variety of fresh fruit, vegetables, seaweed vendors. I love the fact that I am dealing directly with the farmers who works so hard to bring us the freshest produce. I go to the farmers market here in San Francisco, but nothing compares to Carbon Market.. I am glad to see that the mayor is making it convenient for the vendors to have a cold storage facility. Thanks Leylander for conjuring up all the wonderful memories of my beloved Cebu.

Thanks for the Carbon photos. Now I have something to show to my hubby. I used to “mangarbon diha” very early morning before going to school at San Carlos , about 4-5 am to catch the best vegies displayed on mats in the streets in Carbon. I learned my first lessons of “market commodities/stock’s bid and ask prices” over there! I was never robbed or pickpocketed, thanks God! Similar to what Ley had suggested, I went to market and just blend with the people. Japanese slippers or bakya, gabitbit ug basket sa atubangan–gakson gyud, walay reloj o singsing o kwentas, ang kwarta sa bulsa sa atubangan(do not carry purse), ug magbinisaya gyud! Haaay! memories … Farmers market here in Chicago or in Tolouse or in Turino pales in comparison! Looking back, I am very glad my mother made me go and do the market in Carbon. Thank you, Ley.

The first thing i do when i arrived in my BELOVED CEBU, Mandaue is take a Jeepney or a Taxi and go to Carbon. The very “CHEAP” fresh fruits and vegetables are sold there. The farmers and its workers are some of the VERY WONDERFUL PEOPLE you can ever meet in the WORLD.
Yes, i did learn my skills in sales and marketing negotiation in Carbon. which i used now in Australia (Thank you CARBON).
And if you just go around the corner, you come across Colon. Mate! the clothes in Colon are so good and so cheap. TOP QUALITY CLOTHING and you can save sooo much money.
IMPORTANT NOTE: For those of you who are scared that you might get “PICK-POCKETED? Well, half of it “WELL BE YOUR FAULT”. Why? because most of the time, YOU ASKED TO BE PICK-POCKECTED!!!
Just because, you live overseas or have money, you dont have to “SHOW-OFF” and wearing your GOLD AND SILVER!!! Just, be HUMBLE!!! And blend in with the people and used COMMON SENSE!!! And almost guarantee that you be okay!!!
REMEMBER when you used to be poor? And you are very, very, very..HUNGRY! And how little things can be temptation to you? So, YOU CAN EAT FOR THE DAY! So, never ever forget where you come from…

it is nice to see carbon market again.sos sige gyud ko diha during my college life kay josenians man kuno ko. unya ang akong boarding house atbang pa gyud kaayo sa back gate. dungog kaayo ang 1st ug second bell. i had so much fun and good memories on that area. loving it ur pics.
you guys are doing excellent job in every picture that you are taking.. I was only interested in the pics that you have from my hometown, Argao, but the pics that you have for places around Cebu itself made me realize there are still so many places in Cebu that I have not been to. Me and my husband are checking out the pics that you have and is making plans of visiting.

hahaha… i remember when we went there we bought vegies and fish for lunch with my colleague, a bit of rain but its fun some vendors can’t understand tagalog but its nice experience
