Okay, so this isn’t an entry about Cebu but I was just tempted to include this simply because I am well aware that I have readers from other parts of the globe. And unlike Ms. Malu Fernandez, I totally think they’re awesome!
The latest news that got Pinoy bloggers from all over interested, is about a travel article written by Malu Fernandez entitled “From Boracay to Greece”. It was published in People Asia magazine. (She also writes for the Manila Standard).
According to Ms. Fernandez, the article was ‘quite tongue-in-cheek’ and humorous. Pinoys and OFWs, however, think otherwise.
You decide.
The highlights of her article include:
-
“The duty-free shop was overrun with Filipino workers selling cell phones and perfume. Meanwhile, I wanted to slash my wrist at the thought of being trapped in a plane with all of them.”
- “While I was on the plane (where the seats were so small I had bruises on my legs), my only consolation was the entertainment on the small flat screen in front of me. But it was busted, so I heaved a sigh, popped my sleeping pills and dozed off to the sounds of gum chewing and endless yelling of “HOY! Kumusta ka na? At taga sann ka? Domestic helper ka rin ba?” Translation: “Hey there? Where are you from? Are you a domestic helper as well?” I though I had died and God had sent me to my very own private hell.”
- “On my way back, I had to bravely take the economy flight once more. This time I had already resigned myself to being trapped like a sardine in a sardine can with all these OFWs smelling of AXE and Charlie cologne while Jo Malone evaporated into thin air.”
A few days after the article was published, the magazine received emails from Pinoys and OFWs.
To defend herself, she wrote an equally (if not a more bigoted) article. She said:
- “As I type this, I’d like you to know that it’s not about whining, complaining and bitching but just stating the facts. Just recently, I wrote a funny article in my magazine column and my friends thought it was hilarious. It was humorous and quite tongue-in-cheek, or at least I thought so, until the magazine got a few e-mails from people who didn’t get the meaning of my acerbic wit. The bottom line was just that I had offended the reader’s socioeconomic background. If any of these people actually read anything thicker then a magazine they would find it very funny. Most people don’t get the fact that they need bitches like me to shake up their world, otherwise their lives would be boring and mediocre. I obviously write for the a certain target audience and if what I write offends you, just stop reading.
- “Although it may sound elitist to you the fact is this country is built on the foundation of haves, have-nots and wannabes. One group will never get the culture of the other. Although I could mention that it is easier to understand someone who has a lower socioeconomic background that would entail a whole other page and frankly I don’t want to be someone to bridge the gap between socioeconomic classes. I leave that to the politicians in my family who believe they can actually help. Now I seriously ask you, am I being a diva or are people around me just lacking in common sense? Perhaps it’s a little of both!”

filipinos do flood the shops and places especially in the Gulf Countries.. basin ni stop over ni siya sa Dubai. hehehe
to malu, i wish you kill yourself by spraying insect repellant. you look like insect na BAKUKANG!!!
the way you are, che!!! dabiana
Dubai jud…hehehe but based on the quoted lines above, if you’ve been there you can tell its Dubai and the plane was Emirates.
My Filipino partner has forwarded this article to me; I could tell she was a little angry at the attachment she had mailed to me. We both live and work in Dubai, and no she’s not a housemaid nor are her friends or colleagues.
At first I was not quite sure this was a real article, especially one published by a Manila Newspaper, though I use the description newspaper loosely. I will not go into the style of the writing or some of the grammatical errors in the article the subsequent responses at any length. It would be a waste of time.
Well where should I start, I appreciate as someone obviously not a sophisticated as Ms Malu Fernadez or as blessed with such a, now how does she put it, ‘acerbic wit’. I will comment on her article as stated in her response, which is stated as being based on fact. However as I am not a professional journalist I will endeavour to do my best,
I for my sins travel a lot through the Middle East, Africa, Europe and sometime to the USA. I travel economy most of the time to keep costs down for the company down. I also travel on Emirates about 25,000 miles this year. Yes economy seats are smaller than business class or first class. Now I’m 6’ 2” strange I’ve never finished a flight with bruises on my knees, I can appreciate that this comment by Ms Fernadez may have meant to be humour. But in my opinion Emirates is one of the better airlines I have flown I think her one sided view is neither wit nor objective journalism.
As for comment about duty free being full of Filipinos selling mobile phones, is it? I’ve never really notice. Is it that it’s full of mobile phone shops, was that the point of this comment, well sorry Ms Fernadez welcome to the real world all shopping malls are full of mobile phone shops. I have notice that there are many Filipino’s here in Dubai working in a whole host of positions. I think that the reason there are so many Filipinos working in the service industries is due to their excellent command of the English language. If I also recollect Filipinos were voted the friendliest nation here in the Middle East.
I also note in Ms Fernadez’s (Please note Ms Fernadez the correct use of the apostrophe) response the comment on the have and have nots. I think given that the reason so many Filipino’s find themselves working overseas is to in fact provide for their families back home. Your publication should commend their sacrifice not try and make a cheap shot at their expense. The fact that Ms Fernandez may have been mistaken for a housemaid surprises me as well, obviously your not. To be honest I can’t imagine you doing any sort of housework, perhaps you have maids to do it for you.
I always find this particular nouveau riche attitude; the Louis Vitton, Gucci, Versace etc clad wearers a joke. I’m sorry to burst you little bubble but you are a clear example that no matter how much money you have or try to get the world to perceive you have it cannot buy you class. In fact I would go as far as to say that the Filipinos who deal with me on a day to day basis have more class in their little finger that you could possibly perceive
So in summary:
• Who uses the word chagrin, slightly pretentious don’t you think.
• The Sahara desert is not actually located in the Middle East, it’s in North Africa
• I would not describe you as an acerbic wit, Oscar Wilde or George Bernard Shaw now these guys are wits.
• Now I’ve seen the photo’s and I can appreciate why you need seventeen kilo’s of make up.
• Filipino workers abroad are a credit to the Philippines not a slur on the countries integrity.
• I can also appreciate why you found the seat a little snug. Sorry not very constructive but this would appear given the evidence that has presented to be a fact.
Oh and yes I have read something thinker than a glossy magazine, and no I did not see the wit or factual content in your article.
Trevor Phillips OFW (Overseas Foreign Worker)

i wonder why the magazine even allowed that article to get published?
grabe..Kapal ng mukha ni oink, oink…first, feeling rich siya…social climber…di man malibre ang friends sa villa kailangan makishare pa buti pa mga OFW pag umuwi galante lahat ng tao nililibre… ei siya???!!! sana pati mukha niya inisprayhan niya rin na baygon mukha kasing lamok sarap tirisin..tsaka economy class nga ei?? what do you expect?? tungaw talaga…paka bobo….sana nirentahan niya boung plane…17kg ba kamo hand carry mo? e di sana nagpaplastic surgeryka na lang pinapagod mo pa sarili mo….wala namang mababago sa face mo….trapped like a sardine?? ei baboy ka ei bakit sardine? dapat trapped like a meatloaf….tska yung yung Jo malone mo baka binili mo lang sa tabi tabi sa divisoria kaya it evaporated ….payong matinong tao lang bago mo insultuhin ang mga OFW, manalamin ka, tapos after seeing yourself pumunta sa dr., magpa lipo ka at magpaplastic surgery ka narin ha…why da magazine published this?? because wla na silang matinong article to publish…
This M. Fernandez likes controversy and makes a living out of it at the expense of the hard working pinoys. Don’t waste your hard earned dollar on any magazine with her name on it.
Is there any petitions for this lady?
Tessie Wilms
hey, she apologized AND resigned from Manila Standard and People Asia. I’m betting they asked (or demanded) her to hand in her resignation papers. Or maybe she resigned just so they can’t FIRE her first. O_o
http://www.geocities.com/fernandez_malu/
i also wondered if the article gets through the desk of the editor-in-chief before it gets published?
. .adios . . bow!
malu fernandez,
if you have to take an economy seat to save on airfare, then you’re just like the rest of us…don’t delude yourself into thinking that you’re above us because some of us OFWs own Louis Vuittons, have checked in at the Discovery Shores, have travelled in Business Class and have seen the world…if you can afford to buy a private plane, then i must say that you have the right to malign us!!! i even read once that JFK Jr and his wife were offered first class seats but they politely declined saying, “we wouldn’t get there earlier if we were in first class”…if these people who can afford private planes do not think highly of themselves, that goes to show that you have no right to because you are so ordinary compared to them…the nerve! jo malone lang pala pinagmamalaki moh???hahaha. you give pigs a bad name!
to miss fernanadez I wish she can read this comments shame on her she does not deserve to be in our country anymore, she does not deserve to leave in a way she is having right now. I hope she will get Karma and be trown in bowl of fire with a stick in her body and ohh an apple in her mouth bwahhaah.
If I were her parents I would be ashamed of how I was able able to bring her up I pity your parents for they have to sacrifice also for all this mockery which you have started anyway!!
To start with, I’ve never heard of nor read anything written by a “someone” who considers herself as a “somebody” and goes by the name of “Malu Fernandez”. Oh yes I read newspapers everyday and The Manila Standard Today is one of them. Unless I was having mental diarrhea or my taste somewhat doesn’t pang for her type of so called “humor and acerbic wit,” she’s probably insignificant or too shallow for me.
I laud the editors of the Manila Standard Today and People Asia for publishing her articles in their pages presumably unadulterated. I need not expound on the difference between a JOURNALIST and a COLUMNIST, but each has moral standards and obligations to their readers. If any. She is right though when she wrote that …” if you don’t like what you read and if what I write offends you, just stop reading.” This maybe the reason why I NEVER got to read her until now.
Her observations of how Filipinos abroad treat and act towards each other is not uncommon to us FILIPINOS. It is a known fact that we FILIPINOS are a very sociable and hospitable bunch. And because of this inherent trait, we are more often than not, being misconstrued and taken advantaged of and ridiculed by other races. But that is beside the point. This kind of slam dished out by Ms. Fernandez against her “KABABAYANS” who are sacrificing being away from home and family to make a living is just too bitter a pill to swallow.
Oh yes I have rich friends. And yes I’ve heard them give remarks about other peoples fashion sense, intellectual ability, socio-economic standing, etc. BUT NOT TO THE POINT OF RIDICULE AND TOO DEROGATORY to make one squirm out of his/her own skin. How negatively nouveau. Yes I have underprivileged friends too. They also play the same game but more bare and freewheeling and not flourished with useless adjectives to hide their true intent. Her column was so direct it makes one wonder where she’s coming from doesn’t it?
If she thinks she is funny, fine. If she thinks she has acerbic wit, fine. Her friends thought her article was hilarious, fine. I challenge her to write an article about her so called “friends” in the style she did with the OFW’s. Let us see if they find it hilarious as well. She called herself a bitch, I couldn’t agree more.
She said: “Many people often find my direct attitude to be rude or obnoxious. I really don’t mean to be anything but true to myself.” Well, being true to ones’ self is indeed admirable, so does having patience which she said she sorely lacks. Hasn’t she stopped to consider that the OFW’s she flew in coach with and was lambasted by her in her Fierce & Fabulous column, are just being true to themselves. Added to that, instead of a direct apology, she sprinkled salt on the cut she made with “Am I being a diva? Or do you lack common sense?” She’s got more than her fair share of CRAB MENTALITY and total DISRESPECT. That is direct attitude for you. After her article, it wasn’t a surprise that these same OFW’s and those who share their sensibilities were obnoxiously rude to her as well. Tit for Tat.
I am tempted to give her more than a piece of my mind. But come to think of it, why would I STOOP DOWN to her level? Wait a minute, I already did. For good cause. And I am not ashamed of it either. I AM JUST BEING TRUE TO MYSELF and I have no PATIENCE with anyone who steps and defames his/her own race just to be noticed. Maybe, just maybe, if the politicians in her family are doing even half of their elected job, there won’t be too many OFW’s that she loathes so much, with her in coach, so she can be comfortable. Come to think of it. If you are a privileged person, why fly in coach? I am not done yet.
She states: “Most people don’t get the fact that they need bitches like me to shake up their world, otherwise their lives would be boring and mediocre.”
I say: She may consider herself privileged but now she found out that OFW’s are PEOPLE and not that dumb nor that stupid to just accept her fecal kind of inane writing. Congratulations to her for finally being taken noticed of.
Oh yes I need bitches alright. But not her kind. The kind of bitch I want is the one that can give me “PUPPIES.” Puppies that will eventually grow up as loving companion dogs that will wag its tail with glee and show me and my kin unconditional affection no matter what. I have no need for a kind of self-serving bitch that waddles and shakes up my world literally with its every step and wag of its offensively insensitive and discriminatory tongue.
I admittedly have stooped down to her level to shake up her world and topple that imaginary pedestal she plops, not prop, herself onto. And I am proud to say that I AM A FILIPINO albeit using a foreign language for this comment.
In conclusion, I may have never been to Greece yet, but I am proud to say that I have been to the farthest North and farthest South of the Philippines. I enjoyed and continually enjoy what each and every province has to give. Wholeheartedly offered by the people who may have had family members on that Emirates flight in coach.
Darling Malu…… do u edit your all articles…. I GUESS NOT.! Next time … please THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK … will ya… it’s for your own good…. do i make sense to u?
TO Malu :
I dare you to SHOUT / YELL …… ” I AM PROUD TO BE A FILIPINO” … and mind u…. make sure you wear hard hat and all the protective stuff u can have. (That’s a tounge-to-cheek. …. hilarious…)
After I read about comments on Malu Fernandez and her disparaging article, I just had to look at how she looks.
I too am an OFW (Overseas Filipino Worker) because I am a Filipino and I have worked in the U.S. Although I am blessed with parents who can afford to send me to a U.S. graduate school and do not need to send money back home, my heart bleeds for every Filipino who has to leave his or her family behind to earn a decent living because of irresponsible and corrupt people in our government (She mentions there are politicians in her family…I wonder if they include those politicians who had to cheat in the elections to win). We do not need another irresponsible pinoy to add more burden to what is now very obvious. (I have friends who come from rich families back home, e.g. including those living in Forbes Park, who work overseas [and yes go on TNT as well] even if they can afford to stay home and do nothing). Malu is ignorant that it’s the OFWs’ $12 Billion a year that is keeping the Philippine economy afloat. Without that money, the Philippine economy will be in the same level of Bangladesh or worse. Thailand has already overtaken the Philippines and Vietnam is not far behind. I guess Malu dishes out uncalled for insults against her fellow pinoys because she might have been insulted in the past. From how she looks, I can now understand. I just had to see because most of my friends in the Philippines surnamed “Fernandez” are good-looking or better yet well-mannered.
However, the probable psychological trauma of being insulted as a member of the bovine class in the past is not an excuse to malign other people’s social status (and AXE cologne is sold here in the U.S.). Not all rich Filipinos are like her though. I am 100% sure her clan does not belong to the top 10 riches pinoy families. Trevor Phillips’s (apostrophe and “s” after an “s” is grammatically acceptable and encouraged) observation that she belongs to the nouveau riche is pretty accurate. It is typical for people in this class to show off material stuff to complement their insecurity or low self-esteem. In Malu’s case, the reason behind her insecurity is evident. Her comments are a common elitist version of pinoy “crab mentality.” Such acts may amount to “ostentatious display of wealth in times of distress” under the Philippine Civil Code and may even be a ground for a civil action. Her comments are not beneficial or needed especially in these times. The Phillipine “caste” system is one of the obstacles that is keeping our ecomony from taking off and it needs to end. Moreover, real rich people do not have to insult another social class’ misfortune to prove they are rich. Malu is a concrete example that money does not buy breeding or class.
i pity this lady named malu fernandez, and also her family coz she dragged herself and her family to the abyss of shame. magtatago na yan sa kahihiyan, and maybe, just maybe, kung may natitira pa syang delikadeza, the best way out of it is to commit suicide para naman maisalba mo yung kahihiyang dinala mo sa family mo.May God have mercy on your soul!!! Rest in PISS!!! hohoho!!!

I have lots of friends working in Dubai and sorry Malu, they are Architects and engineers. Kung baga, SKILLED workers. At kahit na domestic helpers, so what? They are earning a decent living unlike politicians (maybe in your family) who are corrupt and thrives on the taxes of people like us who works out butt off trying to survive in this country.
FYI, OFWs are the highest dollar earner for our country.
Im glad you resigned from Manila Standard and People Asia. Because you are not in the position to write such articles. Being a journalist is being responsible. You and your socialite friends might find it funny, but if it was your sweat and tears earning the living for your family and your country, you might think differently.
well-said guys!
This woman is so full of herself she couldn’t fit into a standard economy seat.
You’re just too damn big. No have no right to complain girl…
What a waste of human flesh.
this is irresponsible journalism her disparaging article isn’t not funny at all! maybe she was heavily medicated when she wrote her article (considering that she pops sleeping pills, she probably is on weight loss meds, there might be drug interaction that clouded her judgement), she is delusional– thinking that she is one of the have’s–(louis vuitton, et al). Malu FERNANDEZ– you gotta see a SHRINK!!!and the best one might be an OFW!!
Though my comment is late for Malu oink oink Fernandez let me express what I feel for OFW.

People are saying that Ms. Malu actually appeared in a Pond’s Miracle Cream commercial. Can anyone confirm?
ambot lang kaha pero ang bagay sa iya sa karon commercial sa baboy or pagkaon sa baboy. murag sya man gani siguro nang sa “producer feeds” nga commercial sa Cebu?bagay man gud sa iya.
^^ hahaha. LOL
sakit mo nmn mag salita ms. malu. di mo ba iniisip ang mga taong makakabasa nito. maswerte ka lang dahil maganda ang buhay mo. di mo ba tinitingnan ang sarili mo sa salamin at maawa ka sa sarili mo na subrang taba mo. filipino ka rin at nilalait mo kapwa mo filipino. kung umasta ka akala m totoo mga sinasabi mo. you write that article to impress people na sosyal ka. sana review mo muna sinulat mo. na iba. bilib nasa ako sayo. pero sharing a villa to some friends. ha? wla ka masyadong pera. at next time get a business class ticket para ikaw ang pinakababoy na nahalo dun. sa cosmetics na dala mo sana maraming mirror dyan para lagi mo tingnan self mo sa salamin. BABOY KA yan wag mo kalimutan, kasing baboy ng ugali mo.
she not even pretty?..in fact she’s not even attractive..she’s fat for crying out loud..hehe

at any rate …i have my share of discrimation even at this level of medical profession..but i can take it squarely from a white guy in a white world..but from a brownie like me..?…that’s another story.
obviously her target audiences are ignorant and lack the virtue of sentimentality…even an dash of humility and sympathy.
————————-
i could be a domestic helper and not a doctor..and still i would look and feel more dignified than her..and her so called target audience.

Malu Fernandez should be a responsible columnist; representing the Philippines in that magazine of Asia. Its good she resigned. She just destroyed her name . . what a pity. . . Hope she learned her lesson, if ever. The Filipino people are not dumb, so such “humor” (as she describes it) is just plain idiocy. The Philippines shall rise as one again; its just a matter of time..
i’m not an elistist neither an ofw. though i’m here in europe to study for few months.
a foreign classmate of mine who has a filipino relative handed me a copy of this article
i just felt dissappointed and so my classmate was.
class and pagiging may modo could sometimes not get along together like malu fernandez’ case.
i got some friends here who are equally or richer than those elitists you would know in our country. they own thousands of acres of lands and hotels.pero you would never here this kind of lingo from their mouths.they got bmw’s and jaguars’ and wear the most expensive clothes you can find in the vougue magazine. pero di nila pinagnganaglandakan yun.
at ang greece is one of the chepest holiday destination dito sa europe sa lahat ng di nakakaalam. at ang marriot hotel po ay isang three star hotel pang low-class po dito.
those friends i got here na mayayaman are too humble to tell it publicly.nglilinis nga sila ng inodoro and wlang pakialam kung maitim ang mag kuko nila.

NEW JOB OFFER FOR MALU: Lifestyle writer for ‘Manila High Standard’ and ‘Class-A People Asia’
***This is just for fun***
This article is a wake up call for all filipinos, particularly the publication magazine, they should check first what is being written by the columnist
before they published their article, (sensitive issues).
Man!Its not offensive, its insulting! I’m a frequent flyer kaya everytime na may makita kong pinoy, it’s usual to say hi to everybody. Kahit di mo kakila, just smile or nod that u know each other na pinoy kayo. Baka sya, first time nyang makasakay ng intl flight kaya feeling alien sya sa plane? She’s one of the typical pinoy who doesn’t want to be pinoy or ashamed to be pinoy. Would u believe, dito sa New York or any part sa States, women who have fair white skin, wanted to be brown, as in this summer, mandatory sa kanila ang magpa-tan spray. Some asians too -like koreans (no offense but I know somebody) So be proud and be brown, pinoy! I love the sun, sand, and sea sa Pinas. Dapat may penalty against her or anybody who insults us like this, especially kapwa pinoy. Ipatapon sa pigpen! Let her stay until she squik so loud until mangayayat sya. They should revoke her license if ever she has one for writting again.
Looking at Malu Fernandez’ photo and then reading her line “While I was on the plane (where the seats were so small I had bruises on my legs)… I was able to understand her misery inside the plane. I also understand why she was so bitter with herself (for being too fat and big for a normal-sized plane seat) and to bring that hatred out of herself she wrote that dumb-witted article of hers. She thinks her article was humorous and quite tongue-in-cheek but, actually, it is an article coming from the mind of a fat and ugly lady with some deep psychological issues.
She thinks she is funny but she is not! Probably she thinks that she is cute with your dumb-witted article. She is never cute! To me, she is just a pig splashed with Jo Malone Perfume. Thanks to Jo Malone, Malu did not stink inside the plane just like a pig. Thanks to Axe and Charlie, too, for assisting Jo Malone! What a team!
The photo shows that she is too fat. This is the primary reason why the plane seat suddenly looked small to Malu. It is not the seat that is so small, it is Malu who is too fat! Why blame the size of the plane, bitch? If the plane seat can only speak, it will say to Malu “Will you stay in the luggage compartment, please?”
If Malu will stretch her imagination and put herself into the position of the person who was commissioned to design the plane seats, she will of course come out with the design similar to the plane seat that she claims to be so small. Of course, she will! First, she will be given a specific number of seats to fit inside the plane in order to get the maximum target income per flight, Given that limitation, Malu will come up with a design of a plane seat fit for a person with a normal size and configuration. If she will come up with a design of a plane seat patterned after her size and configuration, I am pretty sure that she will be fired immediately because that plane will never sell because it will only carry a few fat and ugly passengers just like Malu. So, wake up, Malu! The plane seat was not small. It is you who is too fat!
Hehehe…
What’s the matter with me?! Wa man ko kabasa aning “From Boracay to Greece” of Madamme Malu?! ASA MAN NI NAKO PANGITAA?
Sounds like intoxicant sa akong Bisdak Abroad – brain.
Send me a link, Leyland.. PLEASE!!!!!!PLEASE!!!! PLEASE!!
Leyland dear:-)
Ay, buang! Nia ra man diay’s ibabaw!
Borgs: Laming tusok-tusokon?! Unsa may imong itusok?
Ngeeeee… heheheh
well….that’s not funny.if she belong to the elite then why she didn’t check in sa mga hotels like burj al arab which is 7 star hotel…or emirates palace in abu dhabi.can’t afford sya.gosh….well said guys.mabuhay pilipinas.
@oliver: “at any rate …i have my share of discrimation even at this level of medical profession..but i can take it squarely from a white guy in a white world..but from a brownie like me..?…that’s another story.”
the whole point of all this craze is that bigotry in all its forms should not be tolerated by a society that’s sensible at the very least. while i have written my piece somewhere in that sea of links, i have to point out that discrimination from a “white guy in a white world” isn’t supposed to be more acceptable than one from another “brownie.” come to think of it the former is even more disturbing as it reveals a prevalent social subconscious mindset the filipino society has grown accustomed to.
to accept that and the countless name calling a lot of the reactions had taken form or used in one way or another have sadly shown that in dealing with bigotry and discrimination, some of the same outraged individuals tend to end up becoming the same person or group they hate.
just to straighten out facts i did feel angry when i laid down my ideas. it’s just that in my opinion, it’s just as wrong to hit below the belt and indulge in name calling when going against the person.
in doing so, the conflict turns from that of right against wrong to who’s got the bigger guns or gang.
————————–
btw, she did apologize already. read it at selvo’s blog. so keep your pressures in check and half a nice weekend guys!
that’s “have a nice weekend…”
People with class never brag about the things (branded should I say) they have… The way I see it you flaunt it in a way just to be noticed. Is that why you traveled on economy? “Para magpapansin at magmayabang?”
I pity people like you! Kahihiyan ka sa lahi natin!
hi! requesting permission to copy this and link to your site on this article. thanks!
patrick..
thanks..
but that is the sad part of being an OFW..and away from your comfort zone.
be it under the barbaric laws of the arabs, or proving yourself worthy against the facist europeans,or coying around with lusty japanese..and among others in the struggle…live it to believe it, i must add.
i know where you’re coming from..bigotry exist in all levels of human interactions..it is in its expression or how one act out its ugly nature that is disturbing..and painful(as malu fernandez has dutifuly reminded us). we are not far from the same view before i left the country ..and ..i ..a man full of optimism..and idealism. but then i saw the world for what it is…change may be coming and underway..but eutopia remains elusive..doubtful within my lifetime.
better yet…be an OFW
and then read the article again.
—————
and by then you’ll have an at least an inkling where we’re coming from.
we OFW gamble with our lives out here..culture shock is an understatement. far from the support of our family, away from innate secutrity of familiariaty and simple tap on the shoulder of approval from a loved one.
and being ridiculed is not rewarding.
———-
she apologised, she resigned….and then what?
the marcoses left the country a while back…and then what?..here we are.
Malu,
Your article is top of the line hypocrisy… disgusting and absolutely LOW. Your article is so full of shit. SHIT thoughts come from very shitty mind. I wonder if your family has the same shitty attitude.
On the contrary to what people say that you are SOOOOOOOOOO FAT. I DO NOT THINK SO. I BELIEVE YOUR BODY is not FAT instead IT IS LITERALLY SO FULL OF SHIT, YOU ARE READY TO EXPLODE! So my suggestion is… since you are probably hiding, please do the planet a favor, hide in the TOILET forever, or better yet, just flush yourself down all the way to the sewer! FOR A PERSON WITH A SHITTY HEART, MIND AND SOUL, THAT IS WHERE YOU BELONG. YOU ARE NOW A CARD CARRYING MEMBER OF THE “SEWER OF HUMANITY CLUB” .
Jose RIzal would probably make you the President/CEO of the “Malansang Isda Club”! Ohhh, your not FAT, just Bloated like the malansang isda, whew, no wonder your mind stink. SO you see, anyway you look at it, MALU FERNANDEZ, YOU STINK.
What sheer bigotry!
I read about Malu Fernandez’ apology. I am more outraged when she said that she only meant what she wrote as a light joke. We weren’t born yesterday. She wrote the insults twice in the same article! She just HAD to repeat it! The nerve!
I’m relieved that the Standard has removed her. I wonder about People Asia.
I am surprised that People Asia even tolerated such writing to begin with. For doing so in the first place, the Magazine should be boycotted! Readers should not tolerate media outfits who allow such content vs OFWs
If ever she’s not an actual Filipino citizen — she should be deported.
I hope she realizes that it is the OFW’s who are keeping the Philippine economy afloat, and whether you recognize it or not — these modern-day heroes (because they really are) have allowed you to enjoy your carefree, mata-pobre lifestyle. Get out of this country!
That feature is not a bit funny and down right cheap and disgusting. If she’s really “it” – a first class upgrade would have been easy especially if she is a Platinum/Gold/Titanium/Plutonium member of all frequent fliers, or at least she should have taken 2 seats in that cabin if her ass won’t fit in. If she’s well traveled, she should have known better how to overcome such a predicament. Or better yet, get a freaggin private jet. Anyway, that’s what real Divas do. Hehehe
On her Boracay Trip, is she sure the villa is located in Boracay Island to begin with? Vacationing in an estero is no Boracay darling… My trips in Boracay are always fantastic and worthwhile. And when is it become appropriate spraying insecticides on an open area? Where the hell the manners you’ve learned from your “buena familia” had gone?
About her “apology” – it’s a mere show only, very insincere and even proud. I look down to her persona even more after reading the “apology.” I have read works of Hemingway, Ayn Rand, Woodsworth and de Montaigne (to name few), and poetry by Vogue, W, Elle, Marie Claire, Glamour and InStyle (in a nutshell) and none of these promotes inappropriate, uncouth and distasteful style of writing. To Malu – If you my dear have read thicker than a magazine, you should know the fine line between wit and disgrace.
She should be banned from Emirates and any other major carrier, their seats cannot accommodate her big ass and asshole (a.k.a. her mouth).
I wonder how her “kural” looks like now? Hehehe…
Ms. Fernandez should have renounce her citizenship as a Filipino! Sana what she has done could be one of the grounds para ma evict sya sa ‘Pinas…Ms Fernandez, don’t you know how these OFWs contributed to Philippine economy?
@oliver: quite contrary dude, my father has been up to date with the whole issue and has expressed the same sentiment as mine.
i don’t want to turn this into a pissing contest but my dad’s been working overseas for more than 2 decades already. i might not be an OFW but the fact that he didn’t share your opinion, (e.g. a white man looking down on filipinos is better than a fellow filipino looking down on other filipinos,) doesn’t mean that the hardships filipinos working elsewhere experience justify the acceptance of your view.
anyway here’s an even better idea, let’s just agree to disagree, man.
and a good luck to you guys there btw.
Malu, first of all, people who came from money doesn’t act like you do. basing from your writing and ignorance, your attitude clearly reflects that you are “new rich”, no breeding or any class. i don’t care what you say or others say about your social standing, YOU ARE NO CLASS. YOU ARE TRASH!!!!
i am a nurse in NY and i don’t consider myself any better than anybody. why can’t you just be humble? i travel by Business class when i travel and i don’t see that a big deal.
why not buy your ow private pay if you consider yourself an elite, with all that money? better yet, invest your money on a plastic surgeon. surprisingly, as most people doesn’t know you look way older than your age!!! that must be the reason for the huge luggage of make-up. but no amount of make -up
covering could hide your fast aging process. you need to work out and reflect better, better yet enroll in a gym annd direct your bitterness and ignorance on a productive manner.
[...] reading me lubberboy’s blog, I got curious to who this Malu Fernandez is and what her blog is all about. I don’t want to judge the contents of her writing based on what me lubberboy [...]
I just read this now. She should have sank to the bottom of the Aegean Sea with that ferry, but God after all loves all the beasts and the children. God wants her to live and learn her lessons in order for her to be human enough to at least enter hell when she dies.
hehehehe
patrick..dude..
i am very happy your father never came across being discriminated or havent even felt that way for 20 years..in a foreign country..1980s was really a milestone, was it not?. such amazing feat, really.
but hey, my meat to grind is not with you..nor with your father.
being sidelined out here is anticipated..but being ridiculed back there for being here…
have any of you seen the film “Dubai” starred by Aga,Piolo and Claudine?…Piolo was the brother of Aga in that film..i can’t help but imagine what a father can do for his child.
Wow! she has the confidence to say those things to the ofws. She insulted them all. She thinks she’s perfect to be able to say those things. I really can’t believe she did tell those things…
after i read this, unang pumasok sa isip ko is “Bakit siya ganon? e Pilipino din naman siya?” — she used to discriminate people samantalang Pilipino din naman siya.. sabihin na natin na, she came from a rich family and maganda status niya sa buhay pero it doesn’t mean na pwede niya sabihin ang mga ganong bagay sa iba. at first, wala namang ginagawang masama ang mga taong un sa kanya so bakit siya magsasabi at mag-iisip ng mga ganon..
pero in some ways, di rin natin masisisi si Malu Fernandez, it’s because she achieve so many things na pwede niya ipagmalaki. the only problem is that she never became humble to others. di rin niya kinikilala kapwa Pilipino niya. kulang siya sa mga values that a rich person are suppose to have..
wow.. ang galing niang manglait! as if hindi sya Filipina.. yes, she came from a rich family but that doesn’t mean that she can already discriminate other people dahil s status ng kanilang pamumuhay… atleast desente nmn ang kanilang trabaho dba?..
uhm, when i read this article I was like so shocked when she said that she got bruises on her legs. I mean she could have bought tickets for busines class when all she wanted wa to avoid the OFW’s. Another thing is when she wanted to jump into the water she would swim with her head and be above the water. Lets just say that she is so kikay and would not want to risk her face getting wet and her accesories getting destroyed.
Hi. The email was just forwarded to me and oh my God.. She doesn’t know what she is doing!! There are too much of bad and foul words sent to her but have we thought of blaming the publisher?? People Asia should be reprimanded for this, if not for them, the article of Malu Fernandez will not be published.. Malu should not just do a public apology but something to make things turn out right!!
My father is an OFW, even if he is not based in Middle East, still he is far from us.. working all day and all night. Sweating a lot and sacrificing the pain of being away from us. He is doing that to support everyone in the family and Malu, just so you know my father also stinks.. He stinks with great heart and a loving father in him.
In few months time,I will be one of the OFW working for my family, for the country and for myself.. I will also stink, and ride the economy class section of the plane.. But guess what Malu.. I will remain a Filipino and die like a Filipino. Go to church and ask forgiveness from him,. The one who created you. God Bless you Ms. Fernandez.
uhm.. over na medyo ok lang.. hehe.. sana di sya ganung ka rude magsalita.. about OFW’s.. kasi like her they are also Filipinos.. working abroad to help their families financially.. ayun lang.. whats wrong with axe?!..
At some points, Malou does make sense. She’s totally honest bitch, but with ‘no class’.
“Bakla si Malu Fernadez”
Malu Fernadez is a Man!Malu Fernadez is not a woman!
Ah Si Malu!Kilala ko si Malu way back College. Malu’s real name was Melvin Fernadez….she had this great passion with the social scene and a bit of writing. Leona (Malu’s best friend during college days) told us that Melvin/Malu (Malu Fernadez) got his operation 10 years ago in Thailand worth 40,000 pesos (which is big even then). I was really shocked to see her pictures looking like a lady…matter of fact a fat and not so good looking-middle-age woman. Yes! I can confirm this now malu Fernadez used to be a man! Malu Fernadez is Melvin Fernadez! I won’t be surprised if he got rid of her penis as that s his/hers long time goal whilst at college. Malu Fernadez is a man and we have the year book as a proof. Yes!Bakla si Malu Fernadez ladies and gentlemen…so we all can leave her alone now sa mga kamay ng New People’s Army “NPA” and the news is that they wanted to have her in the bundok to make aliw with the bubuyog and make tusok tusok of her like a fish ball!
On the othehand naman daw from the High ranking Officials from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administrations or POEA wanted to ban her from leaving Philippines for 10 years(Juice ko day! so kahit doing a shopping in Hong Kong for a Birkin bag would be a big problem now for Malu Fernadez). The president of the Republic of the Philippines Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was forced to sign daw a document (to ban Malu Fernadez for 10 years leving the Philippines) to be submitted in all portal of exit/International Airports. Wow! President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo could be the greatest advocate for human rights equality! This is good if its true!Malu Fernadez’ case could be a good lesson for all journalist to learn!Mabuhay si President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo of the Philippines! Long Live President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo of the Republic Philippines! By doing this you have won the hearts of all the OFW’s! We should all take pride for the great contribution of the OFW to the economy of the republic of the Philippines! If the New People’s Army wanted Malu Fernadez’ body dead or Alive…then the office of the Malacanang Palace along with the OFW around the globe with their greatest president to ever run the country should support the petition!
Yeah. The article was stinging. Though I think this is her observation and experience. We have to blame her on the wordings and blatant unfavorable thoughts.
I just browsed comments.
Let us shut up. The more you comment on her, the more you begin to be like her. If you are going to look at it in a different perspective, it’s plainly and perfectly similar to what she did. Let her be. Say whatever she wants. Don’t read her article, ignore and for Christ’s sake, let her die in her own sake. but then, yeah she is correct, she is being honest. But I think honesty as far as everything should have utmost care and responsible limitation.
I’m just too lazy to write.
OFW’s and families read this:
TAKIN’ CARE OF BUSINESS By Babe Romualdez
Tuesday, August 28, 2007
As publisher of People Asia magazine, I had hoped I would not need to make any further comment about our former contributing columnist Malu Fernandez. Because of the “violent” reactions from people concerning the issue – perhaps it is better for me to put the entire issue into the right context. The column which came out in the June issue of the magazine talked about her experience in Boracay and her trip to Greece in a sardonic manner characteristic of Malu Fernandez.
Reactions (via text and email) were sent in by readers, two of which were selected and consequently printed in the August issue of the magazine, along with a note from the editors saying that while they may not agree with what Malu Fernandez had written, they recognize her right to say it. There is a fine print in the magazine’s staff box stating that the opinions and views expressed by writers are their own and not necessarily endorsed by the editors and the management.
The matter would have been settled with the magazine’s publication of those reactions. But unfortunately, Ms. Fernandez wrote a follow-up regarding the issue as well as her response to those who expressed disagreement with the said column in another publication – making it worse since it was written in an arrogant and condescending manner. Even I, together with some readers, felt that she made a mockery of those who did not share or understand her “acerbic” wit and humor.
Right there and then, it was collectively decided by Stargate president Kevin Belmonte, editor-in-chief Joanne Rae Ramirez and myself that it was time to give Malu Fernandez the axe. But perhaps Ms. Fernandez knew what was coming because she submitted her voluntary resignation and beat us to the punch, so to speak. It was that follow up in another publication which started the conflagration, followed up with a lot of reactions especially when TV Patrol came up with a report on the issue last week.
Ms. Fernandez had expressed contrition and humility, and that it was not her intention to hurt, malign or express prejudice against OFWs all over the world – but it was too late.
One thing we want to make perfectly clear is that the magazine should not be defined by who Malu Fernandez is, or be judged according to what she wrote in that controversial column, because we and the staff of People Asia recognize and hail the contributions and sacrifices that overseas Filipino workers have made – and continue to make – for their families, for their loved ones, for this country. As a matter of fact, the OFWs were the first to become “People of the Year” awardees when the magazine first launched the award in 2004, precisely because we admire and recognize the tenacity, the industry, the talent, the skill and most of all – the contribution of OFWs to the economy.
Not that we are trying to build ourselves up, but we have been one of those who, since day one, have consistently expressed support and recognition for Filipinos working abroad – from the time the late Labor Secretary Blas Ople launched the overseas workers employment program in the late ’70s to help the economy which was then reeling because of the oil crisis.
There are close to 10 million OFWs deployed all over the world – and whether they work as domestic helpers, nurses, engineers, caregivers, doctors or teachers – there is no doubt they are people who deserve to be looked up to, and are certainly worthy of the admiration and support of each and every Filipino.
#Furthermore, People Asia Magazine is a sister company of Philstar!! The publisher said that the OFW’s deserved to be looked up to and yet published her column, slashing the throat of the very people that they said worthy of their support and admiration. Miss Romualdez (any relationship with Imelda Marcos?), remember her column was not in the opinion section!! BS!!! This is an example of the magazine’s hypocrisy towards OFW’s!! I’ve been reading Philstar online for many years now and right now I’ll delete its website among my faves. And oh I’ve heard that she is related to Migs Zubiri (whoever that is). And that the magazine and the newspaper didn’t accept her resignation according to her friends, go figure!!
Malu Fernandez makes me twist my knickers, she does not look classy and does not have the right to write an article in People Asia Magazine – better yet acceptable sa mga gossip mags. As they say, when somebody talks about signature items, they never had it before. Malu loves name dropping that shows she is so insecure. you choose to act like a proper twat and a pathetic loser!!
Well people, after all that has been said and done about Ms. Malu Fernandez and about her supposed submission of her resignation paper both from People Asia Magazine and The Manila Standard Today, surprise, surprise. Today, her column in The Manila Standard – Divalicious came out to talk about, well, “make-up.” Seems like her resignation was not accepted.
I will admit this is only the fourth article that she has written that I’ve read since the netizens shook her to her senses. The first being the People Asia Article – From Boracay to Greece, second, her Am I a Diva! Or do you lack common sense?, third, her apology and “resignation”, and today’s article in Divalicious entitled, Unseen evil on your dressing table.
Interestingly, her column which came out today, September 3, 2007, Monday did not include names of High Society personalities and Brand Names. And it was toned down. Way way down. Her article tackled on how to keep the ladies’ make-up space and equipment clean to prevent rashes, eye infections and other allergic reactions and the expiration of make-up. And also a big surprise, is she even talked about how TO SAVE on lipstick and to not be a “label whore” since the more EXPENSIVE brands and the CHEAPER ones contains the same ingredients and costs about $0.50 to $1.00 to make. The difference in pricing in the end product lies mainly in its packaging and marketing.
For me, I’d say, judging from this latest column of hers in the Manila Standard Today, I think she has learned her lesson and learned it well.
For other netizens out there, what do you think?
I for one have friends and family who work abroad for a living. And it is disheartening at times that it tugs on my heartstrings when I talk to them on the phone or even over the internet and they hear the television or the radio in the background and they would ask to put the receiver closer to the source of the sound so just they can “hear” a little bit of home. More so if they are having problems or sick and they have no one there to care for them except other OFW’s who are free from their work schedules.
In my case, I’m not totally excluding the Manila Standard Today (MST) from my reading list. I believe there are more intelligible, sensible and credible writers in MST.
As of today, I promise myself that “Unseen evil on your dressing table” will be the fourth and last article I will read of Malu Fernandez, even if she comes out with another article displaying her “acerbic wit” and her brand of humor.
I leave it saying: There will be no complete absolution nor total restitution, in the absence of an equal and just amount of retribution. So there.
Manila Standard’s decision for not accepting her resignation is a big insult to us Filipinos. Can’t they look for another columnist to replace her? Obviously, with her style of writing she did not come from an old rich family. Trying hard lang yan to show that she is rich kuno. If you’re that rich, you should have bought a first class seat.
OKENNAM!BABOY! MALOU FERNANDEZ DI KA DUGONG PINOY DUGONG HITLER KA.BABOY KA NA NGA, ASAL BABOY PA ANG UGALI MO.PWE!PWE! SAAN KA BA NA NAG-ARAL? AT GANYAN ANG UGALI MO .ALAM KO NA, SA U.P (UNIVERSITY OF THE PIG”.HA!HA! PWE! ANG BAHO MO!
Ang kapal ng mukha nya para magsalita sya ng ganyan.she should be persecuted.wala syang karapatan na manlait sa mga ofw or kahit sino pa na marangal namang nagtatrabaho…grabe di ko kinaya ..mas malangsa pa sya sa mabahong isda.kalamo makapagsalita ng di tumatapak sa lupatamaan ka sana ng kidlat
Malu Pasosyal…. kala mo di kumakain ng kanin!!!
Kung diko pa alam…
Inuulam mo ang SINANGAG sa KANIN
Sasabawan mo pa ng ARROSCALDO
Magdi-dessert pa ng BIKO at SUMAN LATIK
Kanin loading…C’mon. More pa
When my lawyer-friend forwarded this article, I just couldn’t find the right words that could accurately describe my dismay, disgust… Is she aware of the fact that the 8 million OFWs is the reason why the Philippine economy is getting stronger? Bah, Humbug!
To my fellow Filipinos, calling Malu Fernandez an egotistical bitch, an oink-oink or what have you is just a waste of energy. Even to hear her sorry-ass is a waste of time too. So what better way to make her apology more acceptable is for her to fly back to Greece and shove a Grecian urn in her freaking A@$#%! AND NEVER TO RETURN… and then we will have World Peace. How about that?
Malu Fernandez may have trashed us, her fellow Pinoys/OFWs, with her tongue, but let us not forget, we, too, may be guilty of trashing the country we all love– throwing cigarette butts anywhere, jaywalking, violating traffic, disrespectful to authority, corruption both in the private and public sector, hate crimes, vandalism, taking government properties as their own, AND A WHOLE LOT MORE. So looking at a bigger picture, Malu Fernandez may appear as a “symptom” of a much deeper societal problem. And this we must be thankful for her. You know something is rotting when a maggots appear. Well, sad to say, Malu is one of the maggots… let us just look for a cure, shall we?
Aloha…
Ops! Correction: second to the last sentence… “You know smoething is rotting WHEN MAGGOTS APPEAR…”
Malu Fernandez – as the dust dies down – where do we go from here? Are we doing something to fill in the gaps – economic, racial and social?
Like it or not the lines are very defined and distinct. For example, the lighter the complexion – the higher the attributed status.
Then there are those who over compensate for whatever it is they lack or perceived importance to a point of contempt and condescension.
Did our outcry make things better or did it reinforce the edges of the cracks, tears and breaks of our Filipno social fabric?
I wonder, wonder, wonder?
Ms Fernandez,
True! Economy class seats are small, can’t you afford Business Class? But I’m quite sure, on that plane …you were the only Malou-wag.
More power to the OFWs
There are two kinds of hypocrites in the world,
first… PEOPLE LIKE MALU FERNANDEZ , second… never mind!!!
Obviously, You can tell
that she’s Asian and probably live most of her life in
Asia where you can find insects everywhere b’coz It’s
a tropical place!!, So… What the “F” is she moaning
about?!!!!
Second…”Pick up a country?”… WELL KISS MY LITTLE SHINY BROWN BUTT!!! Then, she
even blamed her travel agent’s advice to take an
economy sit? the way she described herself, If she’s really “posh” or “rich” why she didnt took
the first class or business class?!!! everybody knows
that Emirates is one of the airlines that provides a
cheap and affordable air flight. I’m sorry but, If I am in the same
flight, most probably, I won’t have a second thought
to ask her If she’s a domestic helper coz’ definitely
our DH looks better than her!!!! Why mock the OFWs? Does she
know what they contribute to our country? She doesn’t know a s%*t!!!
Lastly… Where the hell in Athens is the Athens Mall? Now,
listen to this… the reasons why you visit some other
countries is to see the historical places, to observe
their own customs, and!!! (this is the impostant bit) TO
TRY THEIR OWN LOCAL DISHES!!! Why go to Ruby
Tuesdays? Well, I’ve got an answer for you… b’coz
she can only afford BURGER AND CHIPS!!! That’s why!!!
My Verdict;
She’s a trying hard BEACH!!! She ain’t for
real!!!
just one thing, malu fernandez, do you have a son? if the answer is yes, then, your son is a son of a bitch!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another Cruel(a) de Pig, nakatikim lang ng kaunti (what Malu got is nothing! she’s a bitch material girl) all her senses are gone especially her heart and brain (meron bah? to start with).
pinay gang raped in kuwait…
will malu find something funny about our struggle?
i feel soooooooooo S O R R Y for her….. she’s such an IGNORANT BITCH!!!!!!
My blood pressure went up because of this writer’s (Malu Fernandez) stupidity. You’re born in the Philippines, syempre may lamok at insekto (karamihan sa insekto sa Pilipinas kamukha mo or better yet they look better than you, BABOY!!! ka kasi na mabaho). Baboy ang tawag ko sa iyo, not because you’re fat (marami akong kaibigan na heavier than you), but because you behave worse than a PIG!!!. You’re such a lowly character.
GET A REAL LIFE …PIG!!!
I agree
Maybe this fat fuck smelled her own fucking odor. She must wake up in the morning looking in the mirror thinking i’m Ms. perfect. No you fat slob, you look disgusting!!! you should wipe off some of that cheap make up that you smeared on your face! Who does she think she is? She looks like someone who just swallowed a whole lechon, one of her kind you know. I’m a Medical Professional abroad and i would never say such a thing to a countryman. She needs to go somewhere where she belongs. Perhaps, BABUYAN ISLAND, hehehe or SLOB NATION!!!
[...] the ‘eternally-alive’ controversy involving Malu Fernandez, another one surfaced recently. This time, a lot BIGGER (pun intended) as far as the people [...]

Wow what a debasing insight coming from a woman who thinks she is better than 80% of Filipinos. I hope she got what she deserve. Karma – karma lang yan.

I’ve been there it is a wonderful place
Hush guys! don’t pay attention to Malu Fernandez. Just let her be. She thinks that her ” acerbic wit” is funny. It’s her opinion.
Come to think of it Malu Fernandez is fat and very unattractive. If she wants to be like a white-teen ager-spoiled brat, let her be. It’s her world. If we would take that from her, she’s nothing left but fats and her money that she use to pay the men that she fancy to have sex with. The bottom line is, do not take very unattractive fat woman like Malu Fernandez, seriously. It’s a waste of time. The fat lady is a desperate attention seeker. That’s the only thing she likes to have. No matter what it takes.
