Dalaguete is one of the biggest municipalities South of Cebu City. This sleepy town boasts of laid-back living, lovely mountain villages, amazing natural wonders and a rich and (very) colorful heritage.
Basically, Dalaguete is where the highly-contagious Southern accent becomes pretty noticeable. As you travel farther away from the City, you will notice how people tend to sway when they talk. In fact, the degree of the sway varies from town to town.
According to a funny anecdote, one bus driver plying the Southern route hits the horns everytime the bus reaches a new municipality. From Talisay to San Fernando to Carcar and even to Argao, the passengers hear the same “tidit-tidit” sound (sound made by the horn). Then, upon entering the limits of Dalaguete, the sound changes from the stiff and bold ‘tidit-tidit’ to a soft and almost feminine ‘tidet-tidet’. Then, they reach Boljoon, and the sound becomes tideeeeet-tideeeet.
This story really gets me everytime. And I couldn’t stop saying words with a ’sway’ myself. According to some, this is due to the fact that the Southern tip is (compared to other parts of Cebu) in very close proximity to Negros Oriental (which also has the same accent).
But all these don’t put Dalaguete down. Instead, they add to this municipality’s charm and appeal. The people of Dalaguete will always have this twang. And their children’s children too will say words many degrees softer and lighter. Dalaguete will always be Dalaguete.
But is that something bad? Well, I don’t think so.
That thought alone ROCKS! :)
